The People’s Show Choir is expanding into Coventry with a new choir launching in September. Weekly rehearsals will take place every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9pm during term time at Allesley Park Community Centre in Winsford Avenue, Allesley Park.
Andrew Johnson, the new Choir Leader for Coventry, encourages people from across the city, including Allesley Park, Whoberley, and Eastern Green, to get involved regardless of their singing experience. He emphasises that no prior choir experience or ability to read music is necessary, as he will support singers to feel confident and enjoy themselves.
The People’s Show Choir is part of The People’s Orchestra, a national charity based in West Bromwich that uses music to enrich lives and reduce social isolation. The organisation also supports unemployed people and those on benefits by helping them retrain and find work.
Choir members have the opportunity to perform at large concerts alongside The People’s Orchestra at prestigious venues such as Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
Andrew Johnson, a music teacher at Langley Secondary School in Solihull with over 20 years of experience leading concerts, said:
Music is my passion. We’ll be singing songs from musicals like Les Miserables and easy listening pop hits. The choir is fun and sociable, and getting to know each other helps everyone gain confidence to sing out.
He added that the choir will be learning show tunes over the coming months, along with Christmas songs for a special concert, all while ensuring rehearsals are enjoyable and full of laughter.
Andrew has a strong background in community choirs, having previously founded a choir in Evesham that grew from 50 to 90 members within three years.
The People’s Show Choir welcomes people from all walks of life, including busy parents and retired individuals, offering a supportive community and a chance to enjoy singing together.
Lucy Ford, a member of the West Bromwich choir, shared her experience:
Sometimes, if I’ve had a really rubbish week and I think I’m not sure I want to go, I get there and everyone is like family. It’s such a lovely atmosphere. It’s nice to be able to belt out a song, even if you’re not that good a singer. TPSC is all about you just enjoying yourself.
